Caylin Portuondo from our Ready4Life program was selected as MVP last month. We are excited to share what she had to say.
What originally inspired you to join Hope for Miami, and how has your experience here evolved over time?
I was really drawn to Hope for Miami’s mission. Being born and raised in Miami, it meant a lot to me to give back to the community that shaped me. Since joining the HFM family, I’ve been able to pour into the youth and do my part to make a difference. I started with the Out-of-School team and now I’m part of the Prevention team, which has allowed me to grow and stay connected to the work I’m passionate about.
Working with teens can be both rewarding and emotionally challenging. What keeps you inspired and committed to this kind of work every day?
When I was a teen, I often felt like I couldn’t open up to my parents or any trusted adult. Now, that memory drives me to be a safe person where young people can speak their hearts.
Looking back on your time with HFM, what do you feel has been your most meaningful contribution to the youth you serve through Ready4Life?
One of the most meaningful ways I contribute to the youth is by creating space for open conversations about topics like healthy relationships that often aren’t discussed at home.
Is there a particular moment or story from your time in Ready4Life that has stayed with you, something that reminded you why this work matters?
Recently, a youth felt safe enough to open up and share some deeply vulnerable things with me. I made sure to take the appropriate steps to protect her safety and support her mental well-being.
Hope for Miami would like to thank Caylin for her commitment to the Ready4Life program, and for being an inspiration to Hope for Miami’s team!
