Chosen as our most recent Most Valuable Player, Sonia Benitez began at Hope for Miami one year ago, interested in working with an organization that helps children and youth. As a student at FIU studying psychology, her long-term goal is to obtain an advanced degree as a child and adolescent psychologist.
In her position with Project U-Turn, educating teens, she has an opportunity to be the person that young people can come to for a safe and judgment-free zone, especially if they feel that no one is listening to their concerns. When asked to tell a compelling story, she didn’t want to name just one, but shared that oftentimes students will ask questions about the curriculum and speak their mind, which leads to deeper conversations. Something she holds near to her heart.
Project U-Turn likes to make the most of their time in the classroom by encouraging students to dive deeper and share what they’ve learned with friends and family alike, or even challenging them to utilize the resources in their daily lives. Sonia has found deep appreciation for all she’s been learning in the classroom from her teammates and students.
In her off-the-clock time, Sonia enjoys anything that involves “quality time” with others, either family or friends. She also enjoys reading, exploring new places, and singing. Congratulations, Sonia, and thank you for your hard work!
