As part of Red Ribbon Week, preventing substance use and promoting good health in our youth was the focus and goal of the “Communities Talk” event at the Sports Leadership and Management Academy (SLAM) in Little Havana. Our Coalición Esperanza team created an interactive health education event for the students there, which included several of our key partners: the American Heart Association and the Florida Department of Health. Other Hope for Miami programs also participated in this event as a part of their annual Red Ribbon Week activities.
One of the students’ favorite activities was wearing the goggles that simulated an inebriated state and then trying to play the Jenga game that requires fine motor skills. They quickly learned how important it is to have a clear mind and the risks of substance use.
Hope for Miami wants to thank our intern, Amanda Marley, who helped out a great deal with the logistics of this event. Amanda is pursuing a Health Education degree at the University of Florida, and this practicum at Hope for Miami has provided her with valuable work experience, as well as the gift of her talents (and homemade sourdough bread) for the staff.
